The Atlanta Chapter of the American Guild of Organists is proud of its role in commissioning and supporting new music for organ and choirs. Below is a listing of these compositions.

COMMISSIONS FOR NATIONAL CONVENTION IN ATLANTA IN 1966

Gunther Schuller "Sacred Cantata", Associated (Publisher). For SATB choir, small group of instruments (9), organ. A work of 5 movements some of which is 12 tone, divisi writing. Difficult. Dissonant.

Zoltan KodalyLaudes Organi", Boosey & Hawkes Pub. For SATB choir and organ. Practical for good church choirs in praise of organs.

Samuel Barber "Prayers of Kierkegaard", revised by Lee Hoiby (with permission) for smaller performing forces than the original. G. Schirmer Pub.

COMMISIONS FOR NATIONAL CONVENTION IN ATLANTA IN 1992

Stephen Paulus"Visions From Hildegaard - Part I" SATB Choir, small orchestra of about 11. Consult Paulus for performing rights. Funded by a gift from the J. Erskine Love Family. (Note: Part II has been written after commissioning by the Dale Warland Singers. There is to be a Part III which will end the work making it an hour or longer).

Dan Locklair "Voyage: A Fantasy for Organ" For solo organ. Difficult. Funded by Sally and Carl Gable in honor of Sarah Martin in appreciation of her Georgia State University organ teaching.

Richard Wayne Dirksen "Praise the Spirit in Creation", Hymn with text by Michael Hewlett to tune “Barley”. Congregation, brass, and organ. Oxford University Press.

Gerald Near “Banners" Paraclete Press. For brass and organ.

Alice Parker "The Wells of Salvation" Jaymar Pub. For SATB Choir with handbells and organ. Bitonal choral writing. Funded by Adele McKee in memory of Dean G. McKee, a clergyman who loved and supported church music.

Leslie Adams "Offering Of Love" For organ in service playing.

Robert A. Harris "Behold, My Servant Whom I Uphold" Festival choral work for 2 choirs (antiphonal) with brass and organ.

Judith Zaimont "The Spirit of the Lord" For SATB Chamber Choir with organ. Very difficult. (Copies housed in library at Cathedral of St. Philip)

Dwight A. Andrews "A Blessing Song" SATB choral benediction.

Anthony Piccolo "Lord, I am not High Minded" Oxford Univ. Press. For SATB choir a cappella. Funded by a gift from AAM.

William Albright "Flight of Fancy-Ballet for Organ"

ADDITIONAL NEW MUSIC PERFORMED AT THE 1992 CONVENTION

Pamela Decker "Nightsong and Ostinato Dances" (world premier by the composer and performer). “Undertones” by Herbert Bielawa for organ (an American premier though commissioned earlier by San Francisco AGO Chapter)

Stephen Paulus "Organ Concerto" commissioned earlier in the year by Norman McKenzie and played here by him with small orchestra. Consult Paulus for performance arrangements.

Beth and Ray Chenault gave 2 commissions for 2 organists at one organ and performed them. Naji Hakim "Rhapsody" world premier) and Gaston Litaize "Sonata a Deux" (world premier).

Atlanta Young Singers of Callanwolde commissioned an anthem from Dr. Charles Knox "His Praises We'll Sing" Performed by this group at Convention.

Karel Paukert performed the 1991-92 Holtkamp award winning piece for organ by Ellen Ruth Harrison "that line which is earth’s shadow”. (Hinshaw Pub.) Also Jiri Teml "Tri Skaldby" (three pieces in memory of Jackson Pollock)

Barbara Harbach performed Marga Richter "Quantum Quirks of a Quick Quaint Quark". (world premier)

RECENT COMMISSIONS

Bruce Neswick "The Days Are Surely Coming"; unpublished; SATB Anthem for Lent V; composed in 2003

William Krape "This Joyful Eastertide"; unpublished; composed in April 2004

Timothy Albrecht Five Chorale Preludes; Augsburg Fortress as part of "Grace Notes XII", composed in the Fall 2004. The Grace Notes Series and recordings of many of them are available on line through the Augsburg Fortress Store

David Kocsis "Suite for Holy Week"; unpublished, composed in the Spring 2006
